LGBT OPEN EVENING

24 January 2014

Gillingham FC supporting FA equality roadshow

The Kent FA is pleased to announce its Equality Advisory Group (EAG) will be hosting its second Equality Roadshow with a LGBT Roadshow this Friday, 31st January.

The roadshow will take place from 7:00 to 9:00pm at:

Bexley Holiday Inn
Southwold Road
Bexley
DA5 1ND

Football players, volunteers, coaches and fans around the county are invited to join the Kent FA during this evening to hear from guest speakers, examine different pathways for people to get involved in the game and learn more about the Kent FA Reporting Discrimination Guide and Kick It Out App.

Speakers already confirmed for the event include Lou Englefield from Pride Sports and Dr Steven Roberts, author of the report, ‘On the Door-Step of Equality: Attitudes toward Gay Athletes among Academy Level Footballers’, from Canterbury Christ Church University.

The Kent FA will also be hosting a networking session for people to further their understanding about issues and development around LGBT football.

The EAG LGBT Roadshow will be a brilliant opportunity for people to meet like-minded individuals and discuss opportunities for accessing football as a player, coach, referee or in a volunteering capacity.

Natalie Curtis, Inclusion Football Development Officer at the Kent FA said: “The EAG LGBT Roadshow is a key date in the Kent FA’s diary this January.

"It’s important the county’s governing body leads by example in organising events like these to bring the football community together to open up opportunities to be involved in the game to as many people within Kent as possible.”

“Like our Disability Roadshow last year, this event will provide a great opportunity for the Kent FA to reach out into local communities, bringing football and all its benefits to them directly.

"As discussed nationally, LGBT issues are sometimes left on the sidelines in football; we want to ensure this is not the case in Kent.”

“We hope people from across football will be interested in attending the event, where they can ask questions if they want to, learn more about areas of football they might not be so familiar with, and help break down barriers of accessibility.”
