BARRETT: "TEAM SPIRIT IS STRONG"

Gills new signing delighted to be part of ambitious squad

Gillingham defender Adam Barrett says the squad can have a successful season if the players continue to show the level of desire they are at the moment.

Barrett made his debut for the club away at Wycombe on Tuesday night in a 1-0 win, and said the team showed the necessary qualities to overcome one of the stronger squads in the division.

He said: “It was always going to be difficult going to Wycombe – I know they went down last year and I played against them. They have kept a lot of players and have strengthened to be fair, they got a good result at the weekend and they are one of the fancied teams.

“We applied ourselves well and we showed a lot of qualities. We showed character, dug in, talked to each other and got the result that we deserved.

“I have only trained once with the lads [prior to Wycombe] but I really enjoyed it, it’s nice to be back out there, we have a good group of players and if we can keep that spirit, fight and hunger then hopefully we can have a successful season.”

Barrett explained the reasonings behind signing for the club.

He said: “I spoke to Martin before when he was at Notts County and I wanted to get closer to home as my family live in Essex. I’m not far from Priestfield so that was a big factor and the club are looking to be ambitious and go somewhere and having seen the players here it’s a club that wants to get promotion and I want to be a part of that.

“There is a buzz about the club which is nice and you want that if you’re going to be successful. There will be blips along the way with some ups and downs but if you have that spirit, fight and determination then you give yourselves half a chance.

“We don’t want to get carried away, there’s a long way to go and its one game at a time. If you keep showing that attitude and desire then you won’t be far short.”
