Gills Manager delivers verdict on 2-1 win at Ashton Gate
Gills Manager Martin Allen was delighted with his side’s performance following the 2-1 victory over Bristol City in the first round of the Capital One Cup.
Danny Kedwell scored a penalty in the first half before Ben Strevens doubled the advantage early in the second. Marvin Elliott got one back for the hosts late on but the Gills held out to secure their place in the next round.
Speaking after the game Martin said: "It must have been six weeks of preparation with this squad of players, we have had a few people missing today but the supporters were happy at the end and they have travelled a long way to get here.
“I don’t think they had any chances so it was a great team effort to play like that and our goalkeeper didn’t have a save to make to be honest.
“They are a Championship team but in cup football anything can happen. We know what it’s like, we’ve all been there and we know how difficult it is.
“Our squad has worked tremendously hard having had three sessions a day – it raised a few eyebrows but my god they have worked so hard. None of them complain, they have all done the sessions and it’s hard going but they have done great.
“It’s not easy when you go to a top Championship club and they have quality players. A couple of the lads got cramp after the effort they put in. You will get pressure but it’s how you defend it and we defended as a team.
“We have worked on that at the training ground and it’s a real effort from éverybody, on and off the field and it’s good to get a first win under our belt.
“It doesn’t happen by luck, its hard work and dedication.”
