DEATHS...

2000 - Jimmy Scarth

As a youngster, after leaving school, Jimmy worked in his local shipyard in North Shields before, aged 17, he did his National Service in the Navy.

The forward had played for his hometown club of North Shields, mining side Percy Main and Tottenham Hotspur before joining the Gills for £3,500 in February 1952 and making his debut came away at Brighton & HA.

Eight months later he notched a hat-trick in just 110 seconds in a home game against Leyton Orient - creating club and league history.

If one record wasn't enough he added another in February 1953 when he netted the clubs quickest ever league goal, after just 12 seconds, away at Norwich City.

Having scored 24 times in 138 league games he moved to Gravesend & Northfleet in June 1955 and spent five years at Stonebridge Road.

Jimmy died in Welwyn Garden City on this day in 2000.
