Smith began his career at Portsmouth, but didn't make one first team appearance at Fratton Park in three years as a professional.
He signed for the Gills in the summer of 1962 and appeared seven times, a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Workington proving to be his last outing.
1951- Derek Hales
Hales was a youth player at Gillingham before drifting into non-league Football.
He got his chance to impress at Luton, but it was at Charlton where he really showed his qualities by scoring 148 goals in 320 appearances.
Hales was once sent off for the Addicks for a punch-up with team-mate and future Gills manager Mike Flanagan in a 1979 FA Cup tie with Maidstone United.
He returned to the Priestfield at the end of the 1984-85 season, making 40 appearances in total and scoring nine times.
