BIRTHS...

1954 - Kenny Rogers

The forward came through the ranks here at Priestfield and made his debut against Cambridge United at home in September 1972, two months before signing professional terms.

Without ever being a regular, he had made 13 appearances prior to joining Canterbury City in March 1974.

Spells later followed at Dover, Chatham Town, his hometown club, Herne Bay and Sittingbourne.

1961 - Dean Horrix

Millwall forward Dean came to Gillingham in a 'swap' deal that saw Dean White move to the Den in March 1983.

His debut came against AFC Bournemouth but at the end of the season, having made 14 appearances, a £10,000 fee saw him sign for Reading.

Spells followed at Cardiff City (loan), Millwall again and Bristol City but shortly after his move to Ashton Gate the 28-year-old was tragically killed in a car accident.

1970 - Barry Ashby

Having come through the ranks at Watford and playing for Brentford, Barry joined the Gills for a tribunal set fee of £140,000 in the summer of 1997 and made his debut on the opening day of the season in a goalless draw at home to Preston.

'Ash' went on to make 319 appearances, scoring ten goals, playing his last game in the final day relegation heart-breaker at Nottingham Forest in May 2005.

The 34-year-old's eight year association with the club ended after he turned down a contract extension under Neale Cooper's managerial stint.

He played for Welling United, later managed Margate and is currently back at Park View Road as assistant manager to Jamie Day.
