Winger ready for Preston clash....
Gills winger Myles Weston says he is enjoying his football at the present moment and is focusing on helping the club get a positive result at Preston on Saturday.
Weston joined the club from Brentford on a free transfer prior to the first league game of the season and has caused defences several problems with his pace and quick feet.
The midfielder says that although the Whites are a division above, the Gills are more than capable of getting a result if they perform to their maximum.
Speaking earlier in the week he said: “It’s the FA Cup and we’re playing against Preston who I think are a strong and disciplined team so it will be a good game I think.
“It will be weird being the underdogs but I feel we should go there and enjoy it – they are the league above but if we play well we will have a good chance of winning the game. It doesn’t matter that they are the league above.
“It’s a good game to get back playing well and how we should be playing. If we can do that against Preston there is no reason we can’t do that in the league. The most important thing in football is to just enjoy it.
“It’s nice with the prospect of going in to the third round. We are in League Two and if we do beat Preston we have a good chance of playing a Premier League team which a lot of players in our team haven’t played against.”
Myles was asked if he had ever played against a Premiership side in the FA Cup.
He replied: “Not in the FA Cup, I’ve got to the fifth round of the Carling Cup and I played against Everton and Birmingham when they were in the Premiership and it’s a good experience to test yourself against the best.
“Hopefully we get promoted this season and we are playing against teams like Preston every week so it will be a good test to see how we do.
“League One and League Two is not a huge difference, we are the underdogs in this game because they are in a higher league and they are a big team having been in the Championship a couple of years ago.
“We have a lot of team spirit and we keep going. Even when things are not going well we all stick together and we get through it.
“Hopefully it’s an enjoyable trip back – it’s not nice when you go so far, lose and then come all the way back when you’re thinking about the game.”
Myles was asked where in particular he enjoys playing, but he says he is just happy being in the squad and is taking his chances when they come along.
He said: “Before I signed the gaffer knew I could play on the wing or up front and to be honest I’m happy to play either or wherever I can help the team – I’m comfortable playing both positions.
“I’m just enjoying playing and scoring goals, it doesn’t matter where I play.
“Last season I didn’t play as much as I wanted to, but here I am and I’m enjoying it. At Brentford I wasn’t happy but at Gillingham I’m happy with everything so that’s the main thing for me and we are top of the league so let’s hope we can carry on.”
Finally Weston praised manager Martin Allen for the impact he has on the side and applauded his positivity even when things are not perfect.
He added: “He’s a very positive manager I would say. Even if things are not going well he is positive about it and when he needs to tell you that you are not doing something then he will tell you.
“As soon as you have done something good then he will tell you and I like it when a manager is real with you because some don’t say anything, they just leave you or freeze you out of the squad.
“He is good with everyone, he’s positive and that’s what I like about him.”
