MARTIN ALLEN POST CHESTERFIELD

Gills boss delivers post match press conference...

Gills Manager Martin Allen said he had no reason to criticise any of his players following the 1-1 draw with Chesterfield at MEMS Priestfield on Saturday.

Craig Westcarr’s 13th minute strike was cancelled out by Danny Kedwell’s far post conversion eight minutes later – neither side able to add to the score in the second half meaning both teams shared the points.

The manager praised his squad for the effort they have showed at the start of the season but conceded they can play better.

Speaking after the game he said: “We didn’t quite click into full gear but I am grateful for every point and the news has filtered through we have moved to the top of the league.

“I have patted all of the players on the back for a fantastic effort, not just commenting on today’s game but looking at things since I’ve been here.

“The players and staff and everyone at the club, including the supporters, have bent over backwards to help me, look after me and help me get the best out of the players.

“There is no criticism of the players whatsoever – we didn’t hit top form but my god they kept going until the end and that comes after a fantastic effort on Tuesday night when we played a good Championship side.

“It was always going to be a hard game – we may have been favourites but tactically we tried something different, parts of it worked and some parts didn’t but that will be me looking at myself and seeing what we wanted to do with the players.

“I need to work out if that’s going to be the best way forward for us as we go through as we have a lot of good players here now.

“We will look at it and we know we didn’t play as well as what we can but they won’t play brilliant every week will they? We have a lot of new players and people moving into the area and credit to everybody.”
