After Delroy Facey struck early for the Millers, goals from Felix Bastians and Andrew Crofts in a three minute spell put the Gills in front but they couldn't hang on.

BIRTHS...

1903 - Jimmy Nicholl 

Jimmy was signed from Glasgow Perthshire FC in May 1925 but had to wait until the trip to Norwich City in October that year before making his debut.

After scoring twice in 89 games for the Gills he moved to Portsmouth in November 1927.


1946 - George Ley

The experienced left-back had played for Hitchin Town, Arsenal as an amateur, Exeter City, Portsmouth, Brighton & HA, and N.A.L side Dallas Tornado before arriving at Gillingham under Len Ashurst in August 1974.

George made his debut against Aldershot the following month and in his two seasons with the club he scored twice in 89 appearances.

After leaving Priestfield he returned to the States and Tornado but later played for both the Wichita Wings and the Oklahoma City Slickers - he was also assistant-coach at the latter.

After a spell back in England as youth team coach at Luton Town he has worked as a coach for both youth, amateur and professional organizations in the USA with Austin Sockadilloes, River City Rangers and current club Crossfire in Round Rock.

DEATHS...

1978 - Enos Bromage

Having previously played for Sheffield United and Derby County, the outside-left joined Gillingham from the Rams in August 1927.

He made his debut on the opening day of the season at Charlton Athletic, the first of 22 appearances before moving to West Bromwich Albion the following March and he later played at Nottingham Forest, Chester City and Wellington Town.

Enos died in Derby on this day in 1978.
