LEGGE: "WE DESERVED THE WIN"

Leon Legge disappointed not to have clinched three points against former club

Leon Legge said the last gasp equalizer conceded against Brentford on Saturday was `a heart breaker. `

Substitute Farid El Alagui found the net with just seconds left to play following an Adam Forshaw free-kick to secure a 1-1 draw, and the Gills centre-back said it was a tough one to take as he felt the hosts fully deserved all three points on the balance of play.

He said: “Everyone fought for every first and second ball and we made it a hard game for them.

“It was a heart breaker really because we deserved the win.

“It was a much better performance than last week [against Wolves], we had a long week in training and we talked about what we were going to do for this game.

“It will be a tough season but there are 46 games to play and we have only played three. In our first game we felt we deserved a point, and with three Saturday we would have had four by now.

“We said before the game if we got points against one of the odds on promotion sides we will take it but with the game we played we felt we deserved all three.

“If we play like that we will be a match for a lot of sides this season.

“Admittedly last week the defending wasn’t great and it killed us when they scored in the first couple of minutes.

“For the weekend we said keep it tight and make it hard for them and that’s exactly what we did.”

Leon was asked if not scoring or claiming a win prior to the match had been a topic of discussion in the dressing room.

He said: “You don’t really think about it, it could be completely different in the next couple of weeks and then you forget about the first few games.

“You can be down one minute and the next can be completely the opposite. Last week was a bad performance by me and I don’t really know what happened but we played against a good Wolves side and four or five of them won’t be there in a couple of weeks’ time.

“They [Brentford] will be up there and hopefully when they play us here it will be a completely different outcome.

“Not going up last season they will want to do it this year and they have bought in some quality players.

“You either hide away from it or stand up to it.”
