Former Gills striker to unveil legends lounge at Priestfield
The Gills will finally make their long awaited return to League One tomorrow afternoon when Colchester United visit MEMS Priestfield Stadium, and to mark the occasion the club will be launching its brand new `Legends Lounge` in our conference and banqueting centre.
The Legends package will see a former Gillingham player attend every home league fixture and be part of the match day attraction with corporate hospitality customers getting the chance to meet a notable figure from the club’s past, while each legend will also be presented to the fans before kick-off.
During the summer break the team behind the scenes have been hard at work preparing our new venue, with new imagery and priceless memorabilia being a big part of the experience.
For the grand unveiling we’re delighted to welcome home a true Gills Great, goal machine and Rainham End favourite Robert “Super Bob” Taylor.
The striker joined the Gills on the eve of the 1998-99 campaign for a then club record fee of £500,000, having previously played for Watton United, his hometown club Norwich City, Birmingham City, Leyton Orient and Brentford.
He proved to be an instant hit and in February 1999 he sensationally showed his pedigree when scoring all five goals in a 5-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Gills went on to contest the Division Two playoff final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium having finished fourth in the league table.
Bob’s terrific strike put the Gills two up with seemingly just seconds remaining on the clock, but City claimed victory courtesy of a penalty shootout.
Regardless of the outcome at Wembley Bob’s 21 goals that season saw him take the club’s coveted `Player of the Year` award.
He moved, ironically, to Man City the following season and after loan spells at QPR, a three-month stint back here at Priestfield and also at Grimsby Town; Bob finally called time on his professional career in the summer of 2003.
Super Bob will always hold a special place in the hearts of all Gillingham fans fortunate enough to witness his prolific performances for the club and I’m sure all supporters will join us in giving him a very warm welcome back to Priestfield.
