PAYNE JOINS PETERBOROUGH

Midfielder joins Championship club on loan....

Jack Payne has joined Peterborough United on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent transfer.

The midfielder, 21, goes to the Championship side who are currently 22nd in the league table and could make his debut at home to Burnley next weekend.

Here is what Martin Allen had to say about the deal following the 1-1 draw with York City on Saturday:

“The opportunity came to go to another club as part of a swap deal with somebody but that fell through at the last minute. Very quickly something else came up with another Championship club so for him to go and play in the Championship at his age it’s an opportunity that can be life changing for a footballer financially.

“It’s already gone through so he’ll go there until the end of the season. I’m sure every Gillingham fan will be a little bit disappointed but it’s the name of the game, a two division jump and you have to respect that.

“If they want to take him they have to pay a certain fee but Mr. Scally has dealt with all of that.”
