BAYO: NOBODY LIKES TO LOSE

Bayo Akinfenwa gives us his thoughts on yesterday’s friendly at Woking

Speaking after yesterday’s 3-0 loss at Woking, summer singing Bayo Akinfenwa gave us his reflections on the match, saying, “It was good, you know, you need game time, you need minutes, you need to get your legs moving so it was nice to get out there.

“You know me, I like the physical side of the game so I enjoyed it. I liked getting my touches and my baring back. We’re disappointed with the result but I guess it’s all a learning curve. We’ll take positives out of the game. We’ll go again Monday and be ready for the main event on Saturday.

“You can’t replicate that first League game in a pre-season match, next week is going to be a whole different vibe. It’s disappointing because you always want to win and winning is a nice habit but you can’t get focused on the loss. It’s only pre-season so we’ll go again Monday and prepare for Colchester.

Gills finished the match strongly with a three pronged attack of Akinfenwa, Cody McDonald and Danny Kedwell and the powerhouse striker feels the forwards are gelling well, adding “We’ve played a lot together in training and me and Cody have played a whole season together so it’s a case of getting it back.

“We’re finding each other again and it’s nice to get out there. You’ve got personal pride and we were 2-0 down so we wanted to get a goal for the people that have come to watch us, so the urgency was going to go up and it was nice.

“We’re getting to know more and more of each others' games so we’ll only get stronger. We focus on the positives and we’re going into the season confident.”

And Bayo doesn’t mind if he makes the starting XI against Colchester or comes of the bench so long as the Gills hit the ground running, “It’s going to be a tough game. The first game of the season is always a tough game.

"It’s at home and I’m sure our fans will come out in their numbers and in good voice so we’re looking forward to it. If the gaffer says I’ll start then I start, but it’s 46 plus games so if not I’ll come on, just as long as we get a good result.”
