KEDS: "WE'RE RARING TO GO"

Striker optimistic about new season

Danny Kedwell says it is good to be back at the club after a nine week absence and says the players are determined to succeed in League One.

The staff returned for pre-season training last Wednesday and clinched two victories in their first games against Faversham and Ashford to ease themselves back in to a routine.

Kedwell, who featured at Faversham, says he is in good shape and is pleased to be back.

Speaking exclusively to the club’s official website he said:

“It’s nice to be back and see all of the lads, the coaching staff and the gaffer and things get to a point when you want to get back.

“You have had your holiday and mine was quite early so you start missing Football. I’m feeling good; I have done extra work so I’m feeling the best I have for a long time so I’m happy with that.

“We all look sharp, we look fit and we’re raring to go.”

Kedwell said that although the memory of scoring the goal that won the club promotion to League One, which came against Torquay in April, he now needs to forget last season and focus on a new set of goals.

He added: “It didn’t sink in for a few months and it took a couple of weeks after we finished for me to realize that I scored that goal and it really was a dream come true.

“That’s in the past now though and I have work to do and hopefully I can do it in League One.

“We need to get on with the up and coming season and think about those things when you have finished your career.”

With the Gills only recently promoted, one might be forgiven for thinking that the club would just want to cement their position in the league. However the forward says this isn’t the attitude that the squad have adopted.

He said: “As Champions going to the next level sometimes you get promoted again and that’s what we are looking for. We are not going to League One looking to take it easy and trying to be safe, we are in it to win it.

“It’s what you have to aim for, there’s no worth playing any football not wanting to win things. We’re not here to be a mid-table side; we are here to move in to the Championship.”

Kedwell says starting at home against Colchester will be a great occasion for the club, and is very much hoping he can once again finish up as the Gills top scorer.

He added: “I’m always looking to be top goal scorer and I want to be a big part of this up and coming season.

“I think that’s the third year on the trot that we have got a home game when I have been here. We won in the last two years and a win would take us in to a big game during the week against Bristol City, and the reason we were top all year is because we had that momentum of winning games.

“It will be a great occasion to walk out there as Champions on your home ground in our first game in League One Football.”
