After leaving the he went on to play for Lincoln City and Watford.
He remained at Priestfield until June 1965 during which he amassed 21 goals in 220 league and cup appearances.
Alec became a regular in the side and was named captain by manager Freddie Cox ahead of the 1963-64 campaign and went on to lead the Gills to the Fourth Division Championship, edging Carlisle United on goal difference, appearing in 51 of the 52 games
In July 1960 Gillingham manager Harry Barratt paid £2000 for his services and he made his Gills debut came on the opening day of the 1960-61 season, a 2-2 draw at Chester, and the attacking wing-half scored his first goal for the club in the third game, a 4-2 home win against Workington.
A knee injury restricted his opportunities over the next four season's adding another four league appearances and in May 1957 he joined Preston North End.
He turned professional with Everton in March 1953 and made his debut in a 3-0 home defeat by Lincoln City.
Alec, who was born in West Kirby, joined the Everton as an amateur in the summer of 1951 having been spotted by Toffees playing for Cheshire Schools and while at Goodison Park he won six England Schoolboy caps, scoring a penalty against Wales at Wembley.
