FISH: "THERE IS MORE TO COME FROM ME"

Gills defender believes he can improve further following strong performances this season

Matt Fish says he is looking forward to testing himself against League One sides next season.

Fish has been a consistent performer at right-back this season, and he was rewarded for his efforts by claiming the `Goal of the Season`trophy for his strike against Accrington at the end of season awards dinner on Sunday evening.

He praised Adam Barrett and Stuart Nelson in particular for the impact they have had on the side during the campaign.

He said: “Awards are a good thing to pick up individually but it’s a team effort at the end of the day and the lads have done brilliantly.

“Some of the awards could have gone to 20 people but it’s been a team effort from the start and we have achieved what we wanted.

“We are looking forward to having a break and then coming in and having a good pre-season hopefully.

“We’ve been in it together and it’s been fantastic to be a part of it.

“Barrett and Nels have been superb – Adam has come in and has been fantastic on and off the pitch. Nels has been outstanding all year, I can’t think of a game where he has put a foot wrong so they definitely deserve all the credit they get.

“After last season it was hard for me, but I went away in the summer and came back full of confidence. The gaffer came in, gave me a bit more belief and I just want to go away now and do exactly the same as I did last year and come back even stronger.

“There is still more to come from me.”

Fish is adamant that the squad has enough quality already to compete in a higher division, and is ready to test himself against some bigger sides.

He added:  “Some of the teams coming down from the Championship could be big clubs so we are looking forward to it. Wolves is a 30,000 seater but it would be amazing to go there and play against some of the players in their team.

“Hopefully we can do what we did this season and be up at the top of the league.

“I think we are in a good position, the gaffer has brought in League One players during the season so with the squad we’ve got we can definitely compete.

“We will rest up and hopefully come back fit and strong ready for the new season.”
