COMMUNITY CUP CELEBRATION

Local schools celebrate cup wins at Priestfield

At our recent home game against Bradford the winners of our Football League Girls and Kids Cups from last season were invited to attend a pre-match celebration on the pitch.

The Rainham School for Girls and Minterne Community Junior School were the winners of the respective competitions, and we were delighted to have them back with us to share in their success.

The Girls Cup competition comprised of a six-a-side competition for U13’s, and last year we had 20 schools from all over Kent take part in the local stage of the tournament to determine who would go forward to represent the Gills in the Area Finals.

Our winners, Rainham School for Girls, strived even further by winning the Regional Finals and on to the National Final held at Wembley.

The school also became the first to represent Gillingham FC at Wembley in the competition.

The Kids Cup competition had a similar structure with a six-a-side competition for U11 school children and culminated across the football league play-off weekends. Again it all started with the local schools tournament with the winners moving on to the Regional Finals.

Minterne Community Junior School managed to take the top spot out of 36 schools at our local tournament, and also worked hard at the Regional Finals to secure their place in the National Finals at Wembley.

Both schools also had the opportunity to meet and train with England Players Steph Houghton and Gareth Southgate.

Adam Lawrence – Head of Football in the Community had the following to say:

“Both schools fought valiantly to emerge at the top over the course of last season’s tournament. It was great to see not just one but two local teams make it all the way to represent Gillingham FC at Wembley.”

The dates for this season’s Football League Girls Cup will be announced next week while the Kids Cup will take place in the New Year, with dates released in October.

So if you think your school team has got what it takes to make it all the way to Wembley, why not give it a go and sign up?
