Academy side clinch victory in Sussex
Head of Academy Darren Hare said his U18’s side were deserved winners after beating Crawley Town 4-2 away from home on Saturday morning in the South East Youth Alliance Division.
Mahlon Romeo and Michael Freiter were among the goal scorers as the Gills youngsters sealed all three points, and Darren was delighted with the display.
Speaking to the club website he said: “It was a good performance, the boys did great going forward and we constantly looked a threat. We have changed our shape slightly in the last few games just to accommodate the positive aspects and attributes of the players and it’s worked a lot better.
“We have been playing Mahlon Romeo and Charlie Webster a little higher up the pitch and with their pace, athleticism and quality we have been creating a lot of chances. Mahlon has now scored three times in three games which is great for him and all of them have been good finishes.
“It wasn’t an easy game and towards the latter part of the second half we still got ourselves in a situation where we had to rely on Luke Nalder to make saves or we’ve have had to rely on their wasteful finishing to be honest.
“Having said that we had enough chances to really put the game to bed ourselves – it was one of those games, it was end to end, quite open, far too open from a defensive point of view for my liking but overall I thought we were deserved winners and we came away feeling very positive."
