GILLINGHAM FC CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF 1963-64 LEAGUE TITLE WIN

Gillingham FC celebrates 50 year anniversary since Division Four Title win in 1964

Today marks the 50th anniversary since Gillingham FC won the old fourth division title in 1964.

Under the management of Freddie Cox, Gills finished on the same amount of points as nearest rivals Carlisle United after 46 matches, but clinched the championship by virtue of a better goal average.

Gillingham went the entire league season without losing a home fixture, however it was an away game which sparked the celebrations as George Francis got the all important goal in a 1-0 victory over Newport County on April 30, 1964.

It was the first time in the club's history that a league title had been won, and it would be another 49 years until the next one after the League Two Championship was secured last April.

The 63-64 side will go down as one of Gillingham's finest, a talented group of individuals who achieved something truly memorable.
