Gillingham win cup game on penalties following a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth
Portsmouth 1-1 Gillingham (Gills win 4-2 on Penalties) CUPWednesday August 27
Steve Lovell delivers his thoughts on one of the club’s most recent U18 fixtures.
This was a very good win against a strong Portsmouth team, with us again winning on penalties when Chris Haigh saved two of their spot kicks.
The game had a familiar pattern to it with us playing all the Football but not finishing off the good play. Defensively Riccardo Thompson and Mitchell Dickinson were very solid and Joe Nougbele and Ross Ibbertson started slowly but got better as the game went on.
Portsmouth scored against the run of play with a swift counter attack but we responded well and equalized early in the second half.
We could have won the game in normal time with Ryan Crandley, Harry Stannard and Greg Cundle all going close but it wasn’t so be, so the match was decided on penalties.
Gills: Chris Haigh, Sam Stewart, Riccardo Thompson, Mitchell Dickinson, Max Kilman, Joe Nougbele, Ross Ibbertson, Greg Cundle, Harry Stannard, Ryan Crandley, Callum Emptage.
Subs: Mitchell Welsh, Dan Adams, Jake O’Brien.
