Peter Taylor says Adam Barrett remains available for first team consideration despite recent announcement
Peter Taylor says he will still consider Adam Barrett for first team selection ahead of the new season. The Gills Manager said last week that he had made the 34-year-old available for transfer following two years at MEMS Priestfield Stadium, but said if he impressed during training and maintains his fitness then there is no reason why he couldn’t play.
Following the match at Ebbsfleet he said: “It was a very difficult decision for anyone to say that someone like Adam can leave the club.
"But while he’s here he will be treated with respect and he needs to keep his fitness going.
“I wanted him to play 45 and if it means he goes to another club then fine, if he’s here then I want him to be as fit as he possibly can be for selection if I want him.
“He is a first class professional in every way and I don’t think I would be treating him right if I didn’t do the type of things I did on Saturday.
“I’m not going to ignore him and let him get unfit.”
On asked whether Adam could play on a consistent basis he said:
“Absolutely, of course he could. He’s on our payroll and one of our players and so if there’s a chance he can come in and do a good job then I will think about it.”
