Goalscorer Joe Martin chats to the media as Gills seal back to back away wins following 2-1 victory at Colchester
Joe Martin said the Gills squad were delighted to beat Colchester 2-1 on Boxing Day despite an increasingly nervous second half at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.Martin netted on 25 minutes before Bradley Dack doubled the advantage nine minutes later. Sub Sammie Szmodics pulled one back for Colchester shortly after the interval, but Gills defended heroically and sealed back to back away wins.
Martin said: “There was a little bit of disappointment with our second half performance, obviously delighted with the win but we can’t play like that too often and get a result.
“Last year we weren’t digging results out, there’s a bit more steel about us this time which is a sign of a good team – it’s a results business and we’ve come away with the three points.
“We would have been happier with a clean sheet but the main thing is that we won the game, we got lucky at times which we’ll take.”
As for his goal, Martin said he was determined to complete a strong team move.
“The boys did great to get down the side, Cody crossed it and I knew I would get an opportunity and I just needed to make a good connection,” he added. “Thankfully I did as I didn’t want to mess the move up!”
