TAYLOR KEEN TO EXTEND EGAN DEAL

Gills boss has begun negotiations with defender John Egan regarding an extended contract

Peter Taylor has revealed he has spoken to John Egan about extending his contract at the club.

The centre-back, who joined on a free transfer from Sunderland in the summer on a two-year deal, has featured in every league game for the Gills so far this season and Taylor has moved quickly to try and secure Egan’s services for a longer period.

He said: “John has done brilliant. I could resist a bid but I am the football man.

“If you are talking about an amazing offer then that would be down to the Chairman 100% but he feels the same as me. We want John to sign here longer, that’s what we want.

"We are looking to build a good young team. John Egan to me would be the perfect star in that group.

“I have spoken to him about extending it. I have left it to him because he has a very good agent. He came here because he knew he would play and I am sure he is happy because he is getting everything he wanted.

“He is showing people what he can do every week. The ball would be in his court a bit. We haven’t talked terms but we have spoken that we would like to extend it.

“I have told him that I see it as a no-brainer to sign something like that because he then has a bit of security. The difference is that is if you get a fantastic offer from someone you would have to take it. If an offer doesn’t come he has security. I would be advising him to take it.”
