GREGORY: I FELT WE COULD NICK IT

Gills Man of the Match against Wolves pleased to grab late winner

Gills midfielder Steven Gregory said it was satisfying to grab a late winner against Wolves on Friday night with the team having suffered a couple of last minute heartaches themselves in recent matches.

Cody McDonald snatched a late winner against Kenny Jackett’s men in the second minute of stoppage time after taking advantage of a loose ball inside the box, and Gregory, who was voted Sponsors’ Man of the Match, was delighted to seal all three points in a 1-0 win at Priestfield.

Speaking exclusively to the club’s official website he said:

“It was our turn Friday; I don’t know how many games we have conceded late. I think the lads tallied up nine or ten points that we have dropped from conceding in the last five or 10 minutes so it was really good to get one ourselves and hopefully that will continue to happen.

“It’s a solid performance from us, I wouldn’t say we were outstanding but we kept our shape well and frustrated them. As soon as we got the corner I felt we could nick it and that’s what happened.

“They had a game two days ago which could have helped when we had our one called off, we felt it was the best time to play them.

“Even though the results in the last two games haven’t gone our way we felt confident that our performance was there, we went in to it in a good state of mind and that showed.”

Gregory praised the work of the ground staff for ensuring the game went ahead, and is now looking forward to an extended break after a hectic festive period.

He said: “The amount of rain we had it was incredible the game was played, it was very heavy the pitch in the middle section and that will take some recovering, but we have a couple of weeks now for it to recover.

“They did a fantastic job to get the game played and with the cameras here it was important it was.

“It was enjoyable [the festive schedule], games coming thick and fast. It’s what we are used to now as professionals with all of the fixtures over Christmas but it’s nice to have them out the way and we have eight days until the next one.

“We can put our feet up over the weekend come in Monday and have a good week’s training.”
