TAYLOR: WE WORKED EXTREMELY HARD

Gills Manager delighted with collective effort as late McDonald strike sinks Wolves in live TV fixture

Peter Taylor praised his side for their hard work and `team performance` after seeing the Gills record a late 1-0 win over Wolves at MEMS Priestfield on Friday night.

Cody McDonald smashed home an effort in the dying seconds following a Jake Hessenthaler corner, and Peter was delighted to see his players get their reward after a dedicated display.

Speaking after the game Peter said: “I think the players know what a big task it is to play against clubs like Wolves so they know they have to put in extra work to get anything out of the game.

“To be fair to us I thought we worked extremely hard as a team and I think in the end we have had a little bit of luck, they had more chances than us but we got the late goal and three points and I think they deserved it on the strength of the work they put in.

“People know how much I know Kenny, his teams are always going to be organised, they certainly were, and they have got some really good players so we really had to defend as a unit or they were just going to open us up all the time.

“At times we had to concede certain areas but as a group of players we worked exceptionally hard.

“The players have got to get confidence from that, they’ve got the weekend off – they can enjoy it and then come back on Monday and look forward to another game next week.

“When you take a scalp like Wolves then you’ve got to enjoy that.

“You can see what a good team Wolves are and we know we are not the best team in the division but we know we have to graft and work exceptionally hard as a unit.

“The players did that and if they do it every week then that’s fine.”
