2014/15 FIXTURE RELEASE: SIX DAYS TO GO

There are just six days left before Gillingham are presented with their league fixtures for the 2014/15 season

There are now just six days left until the Gills find out who they will play in their first match of the 2014/15 Sky Bet League One season.

And to mark the occasion we have put together some brief statistics regarding our opening fixtures since Paul Scally took over as Chairman in June 1995.

His first competitive game as Chairman came at Priestfield on August 12 1995 when goals from Adrian Foster and Leo-Fortune West were enough to secure a 2-1 win over Wigan.

The club were unbeaten on the opening day until 1998 when Walsall inflicted a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a Darren Carr own goal midway through the first half.

Two further defeats followed in opening league games until August 2001 when Gills registered an emphatic 5-0 win over Preston at Priestfield.

Marcus Browning (2), Barry Ashby, Ty Gooden and Iffy Onuora getting on the score sheet for Andy Hessenthaler’s side – current Development Manager Mark Patterson starting the game in defence.

Eight years later and the Gills were at it again – this time against rivals Swindon Town under the management of Mark Stimson who had guided the club back to League One.

A hat-trick from Simeon Jackson, along with solitary strikes from Mark Bentley and Adam Miller sealed one of the best opening day fixtures for the club in living memory following another 5-0 triumph.

In 2012/13 Gills beat Bradford 3-1 at MEMS Priestfield Stadium in Martin Allen’s first league game as Manager, before losing 1-0 to Colchester in the last minute at the start of 2013/14.
