Bayo Akinfenwa elects to join AFC Wimbledon after turning down new offer with Gillingham
Bayo Akinfenwa has joined League Two side AFC Wimbledon after deciding not to extend his stay with Gillingham. In his second spell at MEMS Priestfield Stadium Bayo scored 10 goals in 37 appearances, including braces against Tranmere, Port Vale and Coventry.
He rejected the offer of a new deal at the club in favour of agreeing a two-year deal elsewhere.
On securing his signature Dons boss Neal Ardley said: “I tried very hard last season to get Adebayo in and I’m very pleased that I’ve finally got my man.
"He is a striker who gets his fair share of goals, which the statistics prove, but what the statistics don’t show is how many goals he plays a part in.
"If you put someone alongside him with the finishing prowess of Matt Tubbs then it is clear what we’ve been trying to do here. I am over the moon with it."
Bayo will make his competitive Dons debut against Shrewsbury on the opening day of the league season on Saturday August 9.
Gillingham FC would like to thank Bayo for his services and we wish him well for the future.
