Gillingham FC sad to learn of the death of former youth player Nigel Pointon

Gillingham FC were sad to learn of the passing of former youth player Nigel Pointon who has died of cancer.

Nigel joined the club as an apprentice during the summer of 1980 and made his south east counties league debut in the opening game of the 80/1 season in a 6-3 defeat at Tottenham.
 
He made 30 appearances that season, scoring four goals.
 
The following season, 1981/2, he made 20 appearances, scoring five goals which included a hat trick against Watford on Saturday 19 September 1981.
 
He was not offered a professional contract and left during the summer of 1982.

He went on to play for Kent side Herne Bay, and on the learning of his passing Manager Sam Denly told the club website:

"I had the privilege of not only knowing Nigel but also playing alongside him. At that time Nigel was at the end of his playing career but was still a top quality striker and was someone us youngsters at the time learnt a lot from.

"A genuine top bloke who always seemed to be smiling especially when slotting one home! He will always be remembered at Herne Bay Football Club.

"He was taken far too early and at this sad time both mine and the club's thoughts are with his family. Rest in peace mate."
