Michael Doughty confident Gills can start turning recent performances into positive results
Michael Doughty says the squad owe it to Manager Peter Taylor to start turning their performances into some positive results.
Gillingham were beaten 2-1 by unbeaten League One leaders Bristol City on Saturday in the first round of the FA Cup, but the on loan QPR midfielder praised his team-mates for their persistence in trying to force a late equaliser.
He said: “I thought we were quite unlucky to be 2-0 down in the first place but credit to the lads because we showed a lot of character to try and get back in the game.
“Towards the end we started to heap the pressure on and showed that we are a good side and can compete with teams like Bristol City.
“In spells we matched them and we need to produce those moments on a more consistent basis during the 90 minutes.
“We are under no illusions, we are in the relegation zone and the FA Cup was an opportunity to try and build some confidence and as professionals we understand we are not producing the results that the performances may have deserved.
“As a unit we need to continue to work hard and I think that result will come.
“We had our tails up towards the last 20 minutes and it just didn’t seem to fall for us, but as a group we can’t fault the effort levels that were put in and everyone worked for the shirt and showed a great level of desire and hunger to win the game.
“We owe it to the Manager to start turning those performances into results and start climbing the league again.”
