DAVIES DESERVES NEW CONTRACT - TAYLOR

Gillingham Manager Peter Taylor reveals how pleased he is to see Callum Davies commit his future to the club after signing a 12-month extension to his current deal

Peter Taylor said it’s great news for the Football Club to see Callum Davies extend his contract at MEMS Priestfield Stadium for a further year.

The 21-year-old centre back signed a new 12 month deal prior to the club’s JPT win over Colchester on Tuesday evening, and the Manager revealed it was his decision to secure Callum’s services after the defender showed a fantastic attitude.

Peter said: “Yes, really pleased. I said to him that it was very difficult when I first came here because all of a sudden I stuck in Leon Legge because I thought it would be more experience for the situation we were in.

“The situation didn’t really change; it was a tough season for everyone so I went more with Leon than with Callum.

"I said to him the more he starts this year and the more he trains from July 1 the more I get to know him and see what he can do and I think he’s been first class.

“He hasn’t played a lot of games but his attitude has been absolutely outstanding and he wants the ball.

“He wants to play from the back, I went to him and he didn’t come to me. I said I wouldn’t mind you signing another year as a bit of a reward and he was pleased to do so.

“It might have been a bit of a surprise but he’s a young lad who, to me, is going to get better. He’s not a massive earner and he just needed a bit of a security and I think he deserved that.”
