PATTO PLEASED FOLLOWING U21 CUP WIN

Mark Patterson delivers his thoughts following the Gills 1-0 win over Plymouth in the first qualifying round of the U21 Cup

Mark Patterson said he was pleased to book a place in the next qualifying round of the U21 Cup following Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

It took an unfortunate 119th minute own goal from Mason Hughes to settle the tie, with Gills having had a number of half chances in the second half to win the match in normal time.

The Gills development coach said it was pleasing to advance to the next stage but said the match could easily have gone the other way.

He said: “I don’t know if it would have been unjust [to lose] because you have to take your chances, we created a few good openings without really looking like were going to score.

“We had a few chances which, with a bit more composure and choice, may have resulted in a clear opportunity. Plymouth came and had a go and they could have been ahead.

“Glenn made a couple of good saves in the first half but it was really unfortunate for Plymouth how the own goal happened.

“We are very pleased to get through and it gives us chance to go and test ourselves against a higher category side in Cardiff.

“We are looking forward to the next round which will be in the coming weeks.”
