Gills boss satisfied with 1-1 draw with Port Vale
Justin Edinburgh praised his team for showing a different side to their play in the 1-1 draw with Port Vale on Saturday.Bradley Dack had put Gills in front via an indirect free kick before Louis Dodds equalised before the break with an excellent low drive.
The visitors had to defend for long spells but resisted a lot of pressure to earn a point, and Justin was pleased with the display.
He said: “Port Vale have had a good start to the season and were buoyed by their victory over Burnley midweek. All in all we had to a bit of the ugly side today but we did that very well.
“I thought it was a really good game.
“It was a good Port Vale side; they were strong and played some good Football. All over the pitch there were some good contests.
“A few questions have been answered about us because we can do both sides of the game. That’s back to back away games and we are unbeaten in those so we will rest them up now and go again for Tuesday.”
Gills accumulated six bookings during the game but Justin thought it was a competitive fixture with both sets of players working hard to obtain a result.
He added: “I’d rather not comment, there were some soft ones and others needed to be done. I thought it was competitive in an honest way, to pick up six I think was a bit harsh.”
Darren Oldaker and Elliott List were included in the match squad and the Manager outlined that the youngsters deserved their place with a number of senior players still out injured.
He said: “They are the next players to come in; we had no other fit players. They are two promising players as long as they keep their feet on the floor and work hard.
“They have earned their places in that squad, they are good enough to step up.
“August and September is a hectic time with 12 or 13 games so we need to manage this young group as they are giving everything.
“We are full of energy so we will deal with it, we have a small group but there’s quality in there.
“I’ve got confidence in the young boys, they are at the club for a reason and that’s what we have a development and youth squad for.”
