HESS: WE LEFT IT LATE

Gills midfielder thrilled to score the winner as club advance to round two of the Capital One Cup

Jake Hessenthaler said it was pleasing to get on the score sheet as Gillingham booked their place in the next round of the Capital One Cup.

Hess latched onto an excellent pass from Rory Donnelly to seal a 2-1 victory with Bradley Dack having cancelled out Craig Tanner’s stunning volley following the interval.

The midfielder felt Gills were worthy winners and wants to continue with a winning mentality for as long as possible.

Following the game he said: “All the boys worked hard, we came out in the second half and they scored a good goal but I thought we could get back in the game and I think we deserved to come away with the win.
“We left it late but it makes it harder for them to score again!

“Dacky went through and what a finish it was, I asked the ref how long and he said five minutes and I still felt we would get another chance and luckily enough it was for me, but I couldn’t miss.

“A great knock back by Rory and it was nice to get on the score sheet.”

Gillingham showed some encouraging qualities in the closing stages and Jake said the squad want to be hard to beat.

He added: “It shows the fight and the character and we want to continue that winning mentality and that showed in the last 10 minutes – we kicked on again and didn’t let their goal affect us.

“We won’t give up, we know there will be a positive part of the game and we have to take advantage of that. The gaffer tells us to work hard and then we will be hard to beat.”
