EDINBURGH DELIGHTED WITH POSH WIN

Gills new Manager Justin Edinburgh shares his delight as his team take all three points from Peterborough following a 2-1 win

Justin Edinburgh said it was pleasing to get his managerial tenure at Gillingham off to a winning start after an impressive 2-1 win over Peterborough at London Road.

Bradley Dack and John Marquis scored either side of half time, sandwiching an equaliser from Jack Payne, to secure all three points for the Gills.

Following the game the gaffer said: “Obviously pleasing, we had to ride our luck in the first 20-25 minutes but once we got over that initial period we got ourselves into the game and got the lead.

“All in all I’m delighted with the effort of the players.”

Dack’s all-round contribution pleased the Manager, however he was keen to point out that all players had given everything for the shirt following a difficult first half an hour.

He added: “One hit the cross bar, one was a good save by Nelson and they played an attacking formation and we took a little while to get to grips with it and we changed one or two things.

“He [Dack] has got so much energy, like Jake Hessenthaler, and Lofty in there controlling them and that’s one thing I haven’t got to ask this group to do is run.

“If anything I’m trying to put the reins on them to try and control that enthusiasm and channel it into being more productive on the ball.”

The winning goal was a brilliant team move, finished off by Marquis:

“It’s a very good goal, he started off the play,” Justin added. “He controlled it and got it out wide and then got into the box and dispatched it superbly. It was a sublime finish and a great goal to win the game.”
