Gills Coach Darren Hare delivers his immediate thoughts following the 3-1 win over Coventry
Darren Hare praised the persistence of the Gillingham players following the 3-1 win over Coventry at Priestfield on Saturday. With Coventry leading 1-0 going into the last 10 minutes the Gills stormed back and won the match in terrific style with three well worked goals.
John Marquis found the net from close range with Cody McDonald converting from the spot before sub Jermaine McGlashan sealed the win with a brilliant strike in the final moments.
Darren, part of the caretaker management staff, credited the players for their hard work and said their determination paid off.
He said: “The lads were absolutely fantastic and they have been for the last two weeks since the Manager left. It’s been difficult for them as it has been for us but I think they showed today that they have all the values that we all appreciate at Gillingham Football Club.
“To come back from 1-0 down to go and win the game, in the manner which we did, was very pleasing.
“Credit to them, they are just a good group of lads and they kept battling away, trying different things and we were lucky enough to get the breaks.
“We hit the bar in the first half, John had a great chance early doors and you’re thinking whether it would be our day.
“In the second half I thought we dominated, they were 1-0 up and were looking like they were trying to protect that lead which is what you would do away from home.
“It was just a matter of whether we could get the goal and that did change the mentality of the game.”
