LOVELL PRAISES GILLS CHARACTER

Steve Lovell delivers his immediate reaction as Gillingham defeat Oldham at Priestfield

Steve Lovell praised the Gillingham squad for their determined second half display which saw the club claim back to back home wins on Saturday.

Bradley Dack secured a 3-2 win over Oldham at Priestfield on Saturday with a fantastic volley on 70 minutes – John Marquis having scored twice in the first quarter of an hour.

Oldham levelled the game at two each but Gills did enough to climb away from the relegation places to go 16th in League One.

Following the game Lovell said: “The boys put in a shift today; with the ball I would say it wasn’t our best performance in the last five games but we worked hard defensively.

“They got back to 2-2 but we said you have to keep believing and keep working at it. In the first half I thought we gave the ball away too cheaply at times but we tightened it up in the second half, we got people around the ball and we went to three at the back and had a go.

“When Glash and Brennan came on they had that pace which we could use.

“Bradley has scored a number of brilliant goals here and we wanted him to play in that role behind the front two, we thought a chance would come for him and he took it well. It was a great goal.

“I’m sure it was enjoyable to watch, it was great to hear the crowd behind us as they always have been. Today was a great performance and hopefully they will go away happy.”
