Gills new signing delivers his first interview to the club's official website
Ben Williamson said he is looking forward to taking on a new challenge after signing for Gillingham on a two year contract. The 26-year-old striker decided to leave Port Vale after a four year spell and he believes the time was right to move on.
Speaking to gillinghamfootballclub.com he said: “I was out of contract at Port Vale and I spoke to the gaffer early doors, as soon as the season ended really, I’m from down this way so it was always going to appeal to me and we’ve reached an agreement.
“I was there for four years and sometimes it’s good to have a little change, I enjoyed my time there but I felt it was time to move on.”
Ben revealed he spoke to Captain Doug Loft following early talks from Justin Edinburgh, and it was the skipper who helped sell the club to him.
He added: “I called Lofty straight away and he had nothing but praise for the club, the staff and everyone else here – he’s a bit of a salesman!
“We know each other well; we used to drive in together so it will be nice to know someone around the place.”
Ben described what supporters can expect of him going forward and is keen for the season to get going.
He said: “I like to play off the shoulder and running in behind, I can hold the ball up aswell and bring others in to play so hopefully I’ll be able to show all that in the upcoming games.
“There’s only two weeks to go so I’ll be relaxing during that time and then be ready to go on the 29th.”
