Congratulations to Brompton Westbrook Primary School who have become the latest team to advance to the semi finals of our half time shootout competition
Last week the GFC Community department were pleased to welcome Byron Primary School and Brompton-Westbrook Primary School to MEMS Priestfield Stadium to take part in their Quarter Final fixture of the popular Half Time Shoot Out competition. The players had seven seconds to score from the edge of the D and could choose to dribble and shoot or simply fire one at goal. The keepers were allowed to move off their line as soon as the whistle sounded and put the striker under pressure, meaning that they both had to think and act fast.
The two teams, who had great performances in previous rounds of the competition, were delighted to be back in the stadium for a chance to secure a spot in the Semi-Finals.
Upon arrival, the teams were talked through the rules of the competition and given a chance to ask any questions before taking their seats for the match.
Being the Quarter Finals, it was clear to see last minute nerves were creeping in for some players, with one boy heard saying ‘’I hope I don’t miss, there’s a lot of people watching!’’
As the half-time whistle sounded, the teams were lined up in the tunnel nervously awaiting their moment to score a goal in front of the cheering Rainham End.
After a short warm up, the two teams were in place and the competition was under way.
The opening two spot kick takers were full of confidence which showed on the pitch, netting their shots in impressive fashion whilst adding some cool celebrations along the way.
This certainly added pressure to the remaining players which showed, as we witnessed both teams missing their next three shots. The competition looked destined for sudden death, before the final player for Brompton Westbrook Primary School stepped up to try and secure his school the victory.
As the whistle blew, the young player burst forward and calmly slotted the ball into the right hand corner of the net, beating the keeper and booking his school a spot in the Semi-Finals of the competition.
We would like to thank both Brompton-Westbrook Primary School and Byron Primary School for their participation in the competition and for all their support over the season.
Congratulations to Brompton Westbrook Primary School who are through to the final four, their next fixture will take place when the Gills take on Rochdale on Saturday 18th April.
The Half-Time Shoot-Out will return on Saturday 21st March when we welcome St Thomas Of Canterbury Catholic Primary School take on Woodlands Primary Academy in the last Quarter-Final fixture of the competition.
