Gills Manager reveals his thoughts on securing the signature of striker Cody McDonald for another two seasons
Gills boss Justin Edinburgh says it is great news for everybody at the club to secure the signature of Cody McDonald for another two seasons. The striker signed his new deal on Thursday afternoon and the Manager revealed it was one of his first priorities after taking over.
Speaking to Gills Player he said: “Everyone connected with the Football Club is absolutely delighted with the news.
"With myself it was one of the first things I wanted to get secured and with the help of the Chairman, who has been fantastic throughout, we have been able to secure his signature for another two years.
“He’s a natural goal scorer, they are gold dust really and when you’ve got one at your club already you have to do everything you can to keep him.
“Sometimes you get a club that fits and Cody and Gillingham certainly does that. His affiliation with the club is immense and when you have someone of that quality you don’t want to let them go.
“He’s 28 and I still feel there is more to come from him.”
Justin also admitted he had tried to sign Cody before when he was managing in non-league.
“I missed out to Norwich when I was at Rushden & Diamonds,” he added. “I monitored him when he was at Witham Town which isn’t far from where I live and then saw him at Dartford.
“When you identify players in non-league you tend to keep an eye on them.”
