The half-time shoot-out competition held at the Gills has now reached the quarter-final stages.
The competition is sponsored by Lawtech Group Ltd and takes place on the pitch during half-time of first team matches.
16 school teams from around Kent that currently work with the Gills Community Trust, were invited to enter a team into a knock out style competition with a chance to reach the final taking place at the last home game of the season when the Gills face Millwall in May.
On the day each player has just seven seconds to score against the opposing schools goalkeeper, starting from the edge of the area they can score by dribbling the ball or by simply striking the ball from distance. So far we have seen eight very entertaining matches with some amazing goals, fantastic celebrations and nail biting conclusions all in front of the Priestfield faithful.
Our first quarter-final will take place when the Gills face Chesterfield on 27th February and will see reigning Champions Featherby Junior School take on Byron Primary School. The remaining quarter-finalists are from Minterne Community Junior School, St William of Perth Catholic Primary School, St Margarets At Troy Town COE Primary School, Canterbury Road Primary School, St Mark’s COE Primary School and St Margaret’s COE Junior School.
Sports Participation and Development Officer at the Community Trust, Jack Knighton said “The competition is a brilliant opportunity for Year 5 and 6 pupils at schools in Kent to show off their talents on the Priestfield pitch and in front of thousands of Gills fans. It can be a quite nerve-racking experience for the children but one that we hope they enjoy and remember for a long time.”
Good luck to the remaining teams and we look forward to seeing who the winners will be on Sunday 8th May.
