KERS: WE WERE GOOD FOR THE WIN

David Kerslake delivers his reaction as Gillingham come from behind to defeat Peterborough 2-1

Assistant manager David Kerslake believes Gillingham deserved their 2-1 victory against Peterborough United, a result that put them top of Sky Bet League One for the first time since mid-November.

Second half goals from Luke Norris and Bradley Dack helped the Gills come from behind to earn a vital win against another promotion-chasing side.

“The first half Peterborough were very good, they outnumbered us but we made a couple of substitutions and second half we were outstanding,” said Kerslake. “We pressed them a lot higher, didn't let them have time on the ball and I thought we were good for the win. We could have been out of sight at the end.

'We knew the way Peterborough would play, they can outnumber you in midfield. But we knew if we could get the ball and break on them we could catch them out. It didn't quite work for us first half.

"Although it looked like Luke had an open goal, it was probably the worst chance for a striker, as he had time on the ball to think about it. But he's done the right thing to slot in the corner.

"The second goal was a great team goal, Dominic [Samuel] showed his pace in the build-up. I love seeing Dacky scoring."

Not only did the victory see the Gills leapfrog Burton Albion and Walsall at the top of the table, but it followed two frustrating results against Wigan Athletic and Doncaster Rovers.

“It's a huge lift,” Kerslake added. “Before the last two game, we'd won four on the spin. We know we can hold out defensively.

“I don't think we've come out of the top three for a long while. We've been very consistent this year, we've had up and down performances but if we keep together we'll be OK.

“We're going home tonight top of the table. There's not a better feeling.”
