The Gills manager reflects on Tuesday night's game
Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh spoke to the press following Tuesday's 2-1 pre-season friendly victory against Dartford at Princes Park.
JE on...the performance: “With the ball, I think we're moving it well, there are combinations between players that are starting to work now. I think the way we're playing through the thirds is pleasing. We got more crosses and shots in than we did on Saturday [against Barnet] so I'm seeing progression. I think the level of fitness is increasing all the time, so it's been another good workout for us.
“The new players are learning what we expect from them all the time, and we have to make sure the others pick up where they ended last season.”
JE on...winning friendlies: “As a group, we want to be ruthless. We're getting near now, we want to be more a little bit more clinical, we want to have that person who can be the hero and put the ball in the back of the net. Tonight we showed that, when the balls go in, if the runs are right and players go across defenders, we'll be dangerous.”
JE on...16-year-old left-back Henry Arnold's substitute appearance: “It was really pleasing, it made my night to be honest. When you see somebody who's only left school a couple of months ago, who is now playing with the first-team, it looked like water off a duck's back. The players have given him a great reception and, had he have scored his shot near the end, that would have made the night.”
JE on...team selection for Southend: “I'm not clear as yet, obviously there may be one or two who we know will likely be starters. But there's a lot of thinking between now and a week Saturday, and a game against Leyton Orient at the weekend."
