The Addicks found themselves two goals ahead at the half-time interval after Jason Pearce headed in a corner and Ricky Holmes curled a 25-yard free-kick in off the post to double the Addicks’ lead. Josh Magennis rifled home from close range early in the second half and the Gills were unable to find a way through the home team despite creating a number of chances.
Pennock felt that the Gills had played some of their best football since he joined the football club, but defensive errors and missed chances contributed to the heavy defeat in front of Gillingham’s largest travelling support of the season.
Pennock on…the performance: “We just weren’t ruthless enough in both boxes – it’s same old, same old. It was a free header for the first goal [nodded home by Jason Pearce] and then we give away a silly free-kick for the second [scored by Ricky Holmes].
“We had to chase it in the second half which made it a little bit open, and it would have been really important had we scored just after half-time.
“We had the majority of the play, created some good chances but didn’t put the ball away. I thought I was the best that we have played for a long time.”
Pennock on…team tactics: “I thought Harry [Cornick] and Joe [Quigley] put a good shift in, but they just looked a little bit tired as they’ve both had big injuries.
“Josh Parker and Rory Donnelly looked very bright, especially Josh. I was contemplating starting Rory but he had a slight injury.
“I wanted to keep [Josh] Wright in that number ten role because I thought he did very well on Good Friday in the position and [Mark] Byrne failed a fitness test before the game.”
Pennock on…fighting relegation: “The results have been kind to us, but we can’t keep relying on other people and it’s a big game next week against Fleetwood.
“We’ve got to beat Fleetwood then we’ll be sitting much better than we are today. We’ve got to stay in this division and we’re still in a very good position to do that.
“It’s been an okay Easter – it could have been worse obviously, but I think last Friday was a massive result for us [beating Bristol Rovers 3-1).”
