Former Gills defender passes away aged 84
Former Gillingham defender Roy Proverbs, who made 153 appearances for the club between 1957 and 1962, died on Wednesday. He was 84.Born in Wednesbury, West Midlands, "Chopper" played for the Gills' next opponents Coventry City, as well as AFC Bournemouth, prior to joining the club in February 1958.
He made his debut in the 3-1 away defeat to Northampton Town on March 27 1958, and soon became a regular in the first team, securing a slot as a full-back. Proverbs scored two goals during his time in ME7.
Upon leaving the club, he dropped into non-league football with Canterbury City.
