DAY: "PRE-SEASON IS GOING HOW WE WANTED"

Gillingham coach Jamie Day was pleased that the Gills wrapped up the victory against Patro Eisden with plenty more goals and succumbing to no further injuries on Tuesday night.

Goals from Darren Oldaker, Josh Wright, Connor Ogilvie and Noel Mbo gave the Gills a comfortable victory despite falling behind in the first half.

Day called on the Gills to iron out any defensive lapses before the start of the season and is excited to see the players get a full 90 minutes under their belt at the weekend, and hopefully causing more selection headaches for manager Ady Pennock.

Day on…the performance

“It was a good workout. I thought we were a little bit sloppy with their goal but that’s part of the process of pre-season and slowly ironing those mistakes out. I thought we moved the ball pretty well and created a number of chances.

“It’s good minutes for the boys, and some sharpening up ahead of the two games at the weekend. [Pre-season] is going how we wanted it to go and it all counts for Doncaster away.

“At the minute we’re taking chances but on the flip side we need to make sure that we’re solid defensively, we don’t concede silly goals and we keep as many clean sheets as possible.”

Day on…the two remaining friendlies

“They are two games that the boys will get 90 minutes from – everybody wants another full game under their belt.

“I don’t think it matters which game they play in, as any player needs to make sure that their performance levels are what we want.

“We’ll get this weekend over – hopefully with no further injuries – then it’s down to the Gaffer to pick the team.”

Day on…picking a team for Doncaster

“We have a slight idea of who’s done well enough to get a slight nod at the minute, but there’s still two weeks and things can change in that time.

“Everybody has a rough idea in their head of who they would like to play. Normally it’s different players in positions we’ve all put down, but we’ll get closer to it over the next two weeks before nailing down the players to go to Doncaster and get a result.

“It’s a long season and everybody that we have in the squad will play a part in us trying to be successful.”
