LUKE O'NEILL JOINS THE GILLS

Former Southend United defender Luke O'Neill has today become Gillingham’s second signing ahead of the 2017/18 Sky Bet League one season, joining the club on a two-year deal.

The 25-year-old arrives at MEMS Priestfield Stadium after being released by fellow Sky Bet League One side Southend United.

O'Neill, who came through the academy ranks at Leicester City, becomes Ady Pennock's second summer arrival, with Alex Lacey having also penned a deal to join the Gills from Yeovil Town.

Speaking to the club's official website Luke said: “It’s a great move for me. I had options from other clubs but the major part of me signing for Gillingham was after speaking with Ady and Peter Taylor who filled me with confidence, assuring me that I would be playing games.

"I’m really looking forward to joining up with everyone for pre-season.”

The former Scunthorpe, York City and Leyton Orient loanee has represented the England Under-17's on nine occasions and racked up 21 appearances for Southend last season, scoring one goal.
