TAYLOR PLEASED FOR PLAYERS AFTER LATE WIN

Club's interim manager happy to see his team rewarded with a win.

Peter Taylor said he was pleased to see his players get a win under their belt on Tuesday night after working so hard during the last three games.

Max Ehmer struck in stoppage time to clinch a 1-0 win over Colchester at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in the Checkatrade Trophy; his free-kick beating Sam Walker at his left hand post, and even Taylor admitted he was surprised to see his centre-back step up to take it.

He said: “Max’s free-kick was excellent. I think everybody was expecting Billy Bingham to take it…I was, and then Max goes and puts it in and that’s good for the boys.

“I think they changed their mind at the last minute and it took me by surprise and hopefully their goalkeeper. It was a nice winner.

“They have worked exceptionally hard, in the last three matches I couldn’t have asked for any more running from them and it's nice they are rewarded with a win.”

A mixture of youth and experience was selected for the tie with Aaron Simpson and Finn O’Mara both starting the game, and Peter was pleased with their contribution.

He added: “Aaron Simpson and Finn O’Mara done well again; Darren Oldaker does some incredible things at times, he’s just got to get a bit more consistent and we know we’ve got a very good player.

“Overall I thought we might have just about nicked it to be honest, I thought Colchester were very bright in the first half and caused us some problems but I think the longer the game went on it looked more like we were going to score than them.”

Finally Taylor was asked about the rumours linking the club to Steve Evans earlier in the day. He replied:

“I honestly don’t know about whether our club has made an approach to Mansfield, I don’t honestly know that. All I know is that the Chairman and myself have been speaking about lots of different candidates. I honestly can’t add anymore to that.

“I know his thoughts on certain things but I was a little bit surprised myself when I heard that today. I am Director of Football and I am here to help out if needed and if it means there is no manager in place then I’ll be happy to take on Sunday again, but I fully understand if all of a sudden the Chairman makes his mind up on the manager that he wants to bring in, and is successful getting him, then he could be in place for Sunday. I honestly don’t know at the minute.”
