ACCRINGTON STANLEY V GILLINGHAM
The Wham Stadium
Sky Bet League 1
Saturday August 4, 3pm
Team News:
Elliott List (shoulder) and Josh Rees (ankle) were ruled out of the opening game by manager Steve Lovell earlier in the week. Tom Eaves (ankle) should be fit to travel but may not start. Conor Wilkinson has been suffering from a dead leg but should recover in time.
Alex Lacey had a muscle strain earlier in the week and his fitness was being assessed up until the squad travelled.
As for Accrington they could include new signings Tony Warner and Matthew Platt. Offrande Zanzala has returned to the Wham Stadium on a two-year deal from Derby and he is likely to join Billy Kee in attack.
Kayden Jackson is attracting a lot of interest so it's possible he will sit out while his future is discussed. However, Janoi Donacien is definitely out having signed for Ipswich this week.
Manager Comments:
John Coleman – “The new season has seemed a long time coming. We have had a good pre-season, beat three teams from leagues above us and now we have to take it into the main show and not just the dress rehearsals.
“I know we are the favourites with the bookmakers to go down, that’s not a shock, but it certainly doesn’t worry us."
Steve Lovell - “We have used pre-season to get ourselves match fit and get our confidence up regarding goals scored, which we have done. It gets to a stage in pre-season where everybody can’t wait for the league to start.”
Previous Meetings:
The two sides have only met on 11 occasions; Accrington having won four of those, one less than the Gills.
The last game between the teams took place in March 2013 when a first-half cracker from Matt Fish clinched all three points for Martin Allen’s men who went on to take the League Two title.
Odds:
Accrington win – 5/4
Draw – 23/10
Gills win – 9/4
Special Bet: Dean Parrett to score first in a 3-1 Gills win – 285/1.
