Gaffer praises effort as Gills suffer defeat against league leaders.
Steve Lovell said he couldn’t have asked for any more from his players following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Wigan at the DW Stadium.
Will Grigg and Nick Powell both scored before half-time to give the Gills a difficult task following the break, and although the visitors were better in the second half, they couldn’t find a break through.
Elliott List thought he had pulled one back as stoppage time approached, but he was flagged for offside.
Speaking after the game Lovell said: “The boys gave everything effort wise. We had a little bit of a go in the second half, had a few chances and Tom Eaves [in the first half] hit the post but overall they deserved it.
“They were quicker on the ball, we worked hard defensively but they closed us down very quickly and they do it very well. You have to give the opposition the credit they deserve.
“We didn’t get the ball in behind them at all in the first half and I think we played into their hands. In the second half we caused them a lot of problems. We’ll take the positives and learn from it.
“We’ve lost a game of Football to most probably the champions of the league, but we’ll come in Monday and prepare for next Saturday. I thought we acquitted ourselves well, nothing much is going to change. Just because we have lost a game I won't make five or six changes.
“Wigan are excellent, a very good side with some very good players on show. They deserved it today.”
