Gills manager set to make changes ahead of Coventry visit.
Steve Evans has made it clear that first-team shirts are there to be grabbed as his squad prepares for the visit of Coventry City in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.
Evans has been honest with the importance he places on the contest, however this midweek cup clash against last season’s League 1 Champions offers incoming players a chance to shine and stake a claim for the weekend league fixture with Wigan.
“We will try and win on Tuesday,” assured Evans. “This will be useful to test partnerships, get some minutes on the pitch and get up to speed. We will be watching in training and this match, there is an opportunity here to get yourself a starting place.
“Whoever I pick, it will not mean that the ones I leave out will play against Wigan.
“We will give Mark Robins’ team, who were the best team in the league last year, a good game. We always want to win on the day and we will honour the competition the best we can.”
The manager is keen to get new faces into the dressing room, but will only make moves if they improve the team. He said: “We have a small squad. We need to add, but we need the right players in. We can all go and sign players, but we have to do it right.”
If Gillingham make it past Coventry, who lost their opening league fixture at Bristol City, they earn the right to take on either Wolves or Stoke in the third round.
